Unveiling the Invisible Struggle: Mental Health's Ripple Effect on Adolescents, Families, and Communities

This event explored mental health as one of our biggest challenges today - the lingering mental health effects of the pandemic including loneliness, the fraught anxiety inducing college process, and the pressure of school, jobs, and daily life. Over the course of this event, we captured the multifaceted nature of mental health challenges, emphasizing the interlinked experiences of adolescents, families, and communities. By shedding light on these interconnected struggles, we helped to inspire empathy, understanding, and action, paving the way for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to mental health in our society.

Dr. Elizabeth Cohen
Dr. Cohen is a clinical psychologist and the owner and CEO of the psychotherapy group practice Center for CBT in NYC. During her talk, titled “How To Be Okay When Your Kids Aren’t Okay”, Dr. Cohen speaks about ways to better handle a situation in which your child may have problems, stress, anxiety, or other issues. She offers practical examples that can be immediately implemented to improve a family’s cohesion and the mental health of the child and yourself.
Sabina Calle
Sabina Calle is a bilingual (Spanish/English) psychotherapist at the Larchmont Mamaroneck Community Counseling Center (LMCCC). During her talk, she speaks about her experience as an immigrant, the Hispanic and local community, and ways in which everyone, particularly those who are immigrants, can better their collective mental health. She offers poignant insights and a talk so interesting that the audience left amazed.
Caren Osten
Caren Osten is a Positive Psychology Coach, Writer, and Mindfulness Meditation Instructor. During her talk, she offers insights into how we can enter a better state of mind and improve our mental health. She focuses on key details and events that happen in our daily lives, good and bad, and presents a framework to look at these events differently. Her insights are practical and can be implemented easily to drastically improve the way we think about our mindset and mental health.
Betsy Parker
Betsy Parker is the CEO of Sunny, a mission-driven non-profit that’s helping unlock more fulfilling personal relationships for greater social well-being. During her presentation, she speaks about the importance of social wellbeing and how, currently, there is a crisis of loneliness. She recommends “Intentionality” and a variety of “Social Routines” we can all implement to help ourselves and those around us.
Rachel Ostroy
Rachel Ostroy is a seasoned professional mental fitness coach with two decades of experience specializing in adolescence, anxiety, and emotional well-being. Her talk focuses on students and families with anxiety, particularly in the context of college admissions. She shares her experience, both as a student but also mother and mental health specialist, to shed light on the common feelings, but also misconceptions, surrounding this issue. She “keeps it real” and suggests different mindsets and ways of tackling the game that is college admissions.
Alan Dienstag
Dr. Alan Dienstag is a clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director of the Larchmont Mamaroneck Community Counseling Center. His talk is an immersive and interactive therapy experience. Through the questions he poses to the audience, he provides introspection, a deeper understanding of why we may think and act the way we do, and validation of our feelings. He proposes a different mindset and way of thinking that we can adopt to better our and our community’s mental health.
Alexa Tannenbaum & Emma Freeman
Alexa Tannenbaum and Emma Freeman are students at Mamaroneck High School. Through the Original Civic Research and Action Program, they made it their mission to improve mental health at MHS. Their talk focuses on their project, an establishment of a student-faculty committee called the Mental-Health Policy in Action Committee (MPAC) which researches, deliberates, and implements policies to improve the mental well-being of students and faculty at MHS.
